Accessible Mallorca: When is the best time to travel?
Mallorca is a particularly popular destination for tourists in summer. With temperatures of 30 to 40°C, the island really heats up and beaches and attractions are well-visited. For an accessible holiday with mild temperatures, we therefore recommend travelling to Mallorca in spring or autumn. With average temperatures of around 20°C, you can explore the sights of this beautiful Balearic island at your leisure.
Tip: During the almond blossom from January to March, the almond trees on Mallorca glow in magical shades of pink and white.
Mallorca with a wheelchair: Accessibility in public transport
To travel around the island, you can conveniently use public transport. These are adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility:
- Bus: In Mallorca, there are city buses in Palma (EMT – Empresa Municipal de Transports Urban de Palma de Mallorca) as well as intercity buses (TIB – Transport de les Illes Balears). The buses from both providers are wheelchair-friendly and can be accessed via a ramp. There is also a reserved space for wheelchair users and request-stop buttons at an appropriate height. Additionally, visual and acoustic signals indicate upcoming stops. Sightseeing buses in Mallorca are also accessible.
- Train: In Palma, you can get around barrier-free by underground. On the rest of the island, trains from two different railway companies operate, which are also accessible.
- Taxi: Many taxis in Mallorca are also equipped for accessibility. They feature ramps, headrests for wheelchair users, or information displays in large format and Braille.
Attention: Within the EU, there are no uniform guidelines for disability cards. Therefore, it may happen that your German disability card is not recognised in Mallorca. In public transport, you will generally pay the full price despite having a card. For attractions, it may be worth asking about discounts for people with disabilities. However, there is no guarantee.
Accessible travel in Mallorca: Medical infrastructure on site
On holiday, you should of course be able to completely relax and enjoy your time in Mallorca without worries. But in an emergency, it's still important to know where to get help. The medical infrastructure in Mallorca is very well developed. You'll find German or English-speaking doctors all over the island. You can also visit a health centre of the state health service Ib-Salut if needed. There, you'll receive basic medical care after presenting your European Health Insurance Card and your ID card.
